Politics and Public Life in Restoration England

This course explored various aspcts of political life and public affairs in England between the Restoration of Charles II and the Revolution of 1688.  Discussion focused on the diverse ways in which English men and women afforded them to participate in public affairs.  Among the themes considered were political communities; the old constitution and the new politics; private lives and public virtues; political roles, political professions; politics and public order; popular politics; political imagery and political propaganda; and politics on the stage.
