Clefs, time signature, key signature, major and minor scales, chords, rhythms, intervals, accidentals, and enharmonic tones: we will examine these and many other foundational music concepts to help participants develop their musical knowledge and increase their listening pleasure. In addition, we will explore musical form, including an overview of jazz and blues harmonies, details of orchestral instruments, and the make-up of generic ensembles including the string quartet, woodwind quintet, symphony orchestra, and symphonic band.
Stephen Kleiman holds an M.A. in music composition from the University of Michigan. An orchestra conductor in Europe and former music director of the National Chamber Orchestra in Washington, D.C., his Sonatine no. 2 for Clarinet and Piano premiered in Boston last June.
