Fundamentals of Genealogy: Basics for Everyone

Whether you are a beginner or looking for formal fundamentals training, try these seminars, tailored to meet your research needs. Take all six or just those that interest you most.

Research Methodology
Saturday, 10 am – 1 pm, March 9

We will tackle the fundamentals of accredited genealogical research and process methodology including research basics, strategies for beginners, precepts, and establishing standards of proof. We will also review genealogical software and online research resources. One session, $45.

Records Group I
Saturday, 2 – 4 pm, March 9
This class is full and registration is closed.
We will focus on finding and using United States Federal Census, religious, and vital records, and more using Newberry.org, Ancestry.com, and FamilySearch.org. One session, $35.

Records Group II
Saturday, 10 am – Noon, March 16

We will focus on library research and reference tools, including genealogical resources at the Newberry Library, library catalog searching, inter-library loan, and Chicago genealogical materials. The session will include a brief tour of the Newberry. One session, $35.

Records Group III
Saturday, 1 – 3 pm, March 16
This class is full and registration is closed.
We will discuss wills and probate records, local histories and city/county/telephone directories (including HeritageQuest Books), genealogical publications (including PERSI), as well as military, tax, and ethnic records. One session, $35.

Networking and Information Analysis, Recording, and Organizing
Saturday, 10 am – Noon, March 23
This class is full and registration is closed.
We will learn about networking both the “old-fashioned” way and online via genealogical service providers (like Ancestry.com), social media, societies, email lists, e-bulletin boards, and DNA databases. We will also discuss information analysis methods, recording software, citations, style sheets, and organizing many forms of information. One session, $35.

Records Group IV
Saturday, 1 – 3 pm, March 23
This class is full and registration is closed.
We will cover the important sources of maps, land records, newspaper records, and immigration and naturalization records. One session, $35.

Marsha Peterson-Maass is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and has taught numerous seminars at the Newberry.

Required:
Paper and pen for note taking.
Instructor will provide handout with extensive agenda, outline, and several pages from the Fundamentals of Genealogy: Basics for Everyone textbook. Participants may purchase a copy for $20.
