With appreciation for their support of the Annual Fund, Newberry Associates and President’s Fellows are invited to Associates Night 2014. Michael J. Schreffler, Associate Professor and Department Chair at Virginia Commonwealth University and National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the Newberry will present “The Conquest of Peru.”
In the early 1530s, Francisco Pizarro led a cohort of Spaniards and their native allies southward from Panama, along the coast of Ecuador, through the river valleys of northern Peru, and deep into the Andes, where they captured and ultimately killed the Inca king Atahualpa. In 1533, they arrived at Cuzco, the sacred center of the Inca empire, where they found a Spanish colonial town. Professor Schreffler will share the remarkable story of Cuzco as it is told in early sources from the Newberry’s collection.
