"Politics, Piety, and Poison: French Pamphlets, 1600-1800"

By Invitation Only

President David Spadafora cordially invites select Annual Fund donors and friends of the Newberry to a cocktail reception and an exclusive viewing of our latest exhibition, Politics, Piety, and Poison: French Pamphlets, 1600-1800.

Think contemporary American political debate is vicious? Our experience is mild compared with seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French political infighting, a period famous for royal claims to divine right and for regicide. The exhibition highlights some of the most vigorous debates of this period, fought with the French Revolution’s version of Twitter: cheap, ubiquitous pamphlets and broadsides.

Curator Jessica Grzegorski, Senior Cataloging Projects Librarian, will lead a guided tour.

This reception is generously sponsored by Barbara and John Noonan and is by invitation only.
