Late Medieval Manuscripts and Early Printed Books in Northern Europe: A Workshop

Sandra L. Hindman, Northwestern University (Emerita)

Drawing on the rich resources of Special Collections in the Newberry Library, this course investigated primary evidence on the condition of making, illustrating, and reading books produced from about 1350 to 1550.  Its particular focus was on centers of production in northern Europe: in France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium.  Topics of special interest for the course included: the structure of the “atelier” or shop; the division or hierarchy of labor; the relationship between text and image; and the changing patters of reading and looking.
