Workshop with Gillian O’Brien on Thomas Nast’s illustrations in the periodical, America
For this meeting, we are trying out a new workshop format: to enhance our discussion of Gillian’s work, we will bring out the volumes of the periodical America from the Newberry stacks and spread them out on big tables, so the seminar members can study the cartoons as they were originally published. (As far as we know, the Newberry is the only library to hold a full run of America, so this is a rare opportunity.) We will be using collection materials, so the seminar will meet in 2 West, the study space at the far west end of the second floor. (You will need to stow any coats and bags in the lockers on the first floor before coming upstairs.) Also, because collection materials will be present, we will not be able to have any food or drink in this space.
A short paper is available for distribution.
