The image of Chicago has been created through many genres and media: poetry, fiction, drama, film. But what all of these representations of the city have in common is a source, Chicago journalism. Beyond this, however, many Chicago journalists have themselves written work for Chicago newspapers which transcend the limitations of the deadline-driven prose daily papers require. In this seminar, we will read three of Chicago’s literary journalists–Finley Peter Dunne, Ben Hecht, and Mike Royko–to examine their contribution to Chicago literature.
