Erin Debenport, University of New Mexico; Scott Manning Stevens, Newberry Library

Professor Erin Debenport and Scott Manning Stevens, leaders of this summer’s Newberry Consortium for American Indian Studies summer institute, will discuss their current course, including the debates present in various academic disciplines over the such topics as the authority of oral testimony, contested ethnic identities, competing lands claims, and debates over the nature of Indigenous sovereignty in the present-day United States and Canada. Each traditional academic discipline has its own particular set of contested topics and methodologies, and each discipline in turn contributes to the larger multi-disciplinary field of Native American and Indigenous Studies. The student participants will briefly describe the research that they plan to work on for their major project in the seminar.
