Jim Akerman, Kathleen Brosnan, and Members of the NEH Summer Institute

This summer, the Newberry is hosting an NEH seminar for college and university faculty exploring the complicated, contradictory, and contested ways in which humans have mapped and conceived their place in nature throughout history. Drawing upon the library’s rich holdings, the summer scholars have engaged in a series of lectures, workshops, discussions, and field trips that crossed disciplinary boundaries and moved beyond regional chronological specialties to explore the relationship between nature and mapping in the Americas. At this colloquium, participants will share their research findings and talk about the highlights of the institute.
