10 am - 4 pm
The Newberry is pleased to present a one-day exhibtion of an extremely rare and historically important example of the Bay Psalm Book, the first book ever printed in what is now the United States. Only 11 of the original 1,700 copies survive, and Sotheby’s auction house will offer the book in a dedicated sale this November in New York, with a pre-sale estimate of $15 million to $30 million. The copy is one of two in the collection of Boston’s Old South Church, and is being sold to benefit its mission and ministries.
Two additional exhibition cases will highlight Old South Church-related items in the Newberry’s magnificent American history collection. These interesting, rare, and beautiful items both contextualize the Bay Psalm Book, and exemplify the diverse materials – broadside, sermon, pamphlet, guidebook, map, poetry, sheet music, and printed ephemera – one can use and explore at the Newberry to more fully appreciate our shared history.
