From Reading to Writing: Fiction

Saturday, September 21, 2013
(This program continues for multiple sessions)
Saturdays, September 21 – November 23

10 am – Noon

Led by Michael Autrey

Before there were creative writing courses, writers learned to write by reading. In this seminar participants will read not for meaning but for technique. Using James Wood’s How Fiction Works as a guide, we will explore the elements of moderate realism. Readings will be drawn from Randall Jarrell’s anthology Book of Stories. Please read “Narrating” from How Fiction Works and Jarrell’s introduction to Book of Stories for the first session.

Michael Autrey reviews fiction and is finishing a novel. His second book of poetry will be published in September.
