Analytical Bibliography and Textual Criticism of Renaissance Plays
Robert Turner, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
This seminar provided both theoretical analysis and practical experience in textual criticism. Class discussion covered the relationship between literary and textual criticism, modern textual theory and method, evidence for speculation on the manuscripts underlying Elizabethan dramatic documents, early printing practice and its influence on texts, and the ways in which bibliography can aid textual criticism. Finally, the seminar focused on the textual history of King Lear.
