Power and Politics: Northern Renaissance Court Festivals
Mara Wade, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
This seminar provided an interdisciplinary overview of the history, theory, and development of the emblem in its European context. The course was co-taught by Daniel Russell and Mara R. Wade. The course treated the individual emblem as well as entire emblem books. Participants examined national traditions, genres within emblematics, and emblems in the arts and literature. While the focus was on traditional print materials from both the Renaissance and the present day, there was also an introduction to digital emblem sites and research.
Participants: Jill McAllister, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Jalana Ordman, Loyola University Chicago; Trudie Ranson, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Jutta Tragnitz, University of Illinois at Chicago
