9 am – 3 pm
In this Teachers as Scholars seminar, participants will explore the variety of backgrounds and experiences of American workers during the heyday of the industrial revolution, the “Long Gilded Age” that stretched from the rail road riots of the 1870s to World War I. Participants will begin with the racial, ethnic, and gender particularity of the workforce with specific attention to Chicago, then examine sources of industrial conflict and competing strategies hatched by the labor movement itself. Select readings and documents will ground the discussion.
Seminar led by Leon Fink, University of Illinois at Chicago
Teachers as Scholars is a program exclusively for Chicago Public Schools teachers.
