How far things have come since April 2nd when the digital images of the 1940 U.S Federal Census population schedule were released!
Here’s an update from FamilySearch:
- 119,230,695 names have been indexed and arbitrated.
- 31 states are searchable. These states are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming.
- 3 additional states are 100% indexed and will be posted shortly.
More details are available on their blog and a on a 1940 US Census state-by-state progress map.
Ancestry.com has also been hard at work. Their 1940 update status shows that they have completed indexing the following states: Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia.
