Claude Chabrol, a founding member of the French New Wave, is often compared to Alfred Hitchcock for his interest in the sinister forces and homicidal tendencies lurking beneath the underbelly of bourgeois society. Directing over fifty feature length films, Chabrol fuses the formal iconoclasm of the New Wave with the tropes of the thriller and suspense genres, making his movies at once innovative and accessible. This seminar will analyze four films that encapsulate his quintessentially mordant worldview and trademark filmmaking tendencies.
Four sessions. Registration – $120
