Seminar Description

In 1920, Oswald Cooper designed Cooper Black, a typeface sold "for far-sighted printers with near-sighted customers." Its popularity was instantaneous despite detractors and gained an even wider audience in the pop culture of the '60s and '70s. The seminar will be hosted virtually at Starshaped Press, where a large collection of the original metal Cooper Black types live. Cooper’s original sketches from his archive housed at the Newberry Library will also be shared, as well as correspondence with the type foundry. A letterpress specimen print will be created as part of the presentation and participants will receive a copy of the resulting print.

One session. Registration – $40

Since 1999, Jennifer Farrell has operated Starshaped Press, with a focus on designing and letterpress printing custom commissions and limited edition prints and books. Studio work is focused on preserving the craft by printing with antique metal and wood type.
