Black History Month

Opportunities for celebrating Black History month abound!

The Chicago Park District is commemorating Black History Month with a variety of events. Most programs are admission free or charge nominal fees.

Do you know which parks were named after influential African Americans? The District has recognized individuals who have made important contributions to their communities and to the city at large by naming more than 40 parks in their honor. Read about some people who made a difference.

The Chicago Public Library’s African American History Month Calendar of Events observing the culture, heritage, contributions and achievements of African Americans has something for everyone.

If these events aren’t for you, check out other special events at the DuSable,
the University of Illinois at Chicago
and other educational institutions in the area.

Staying home? Surf over to the new PBS Black Culture Connection website.

This month is also a great time to get started tracing your roots. More on how to do that in the next post.
