Celebrate Our Seniors in May

Senior Citizens Month was first established in 1963 by the National Council of Senior Citizens. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter changed the name to “Older Americans Month”. Since then, May has become a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons, particular those who defended our country.

In 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthdays. According to 2010 census statistics, there were over 40 million living Americans age 65 or older. Genealogically speaking, in no time in history have there been more first-hand sources for family history. Take some time this month to appreciate your elders. Ask about those stories and old family pictures. And make sure to take new family pictures to pass down to those yet to come!
