The Newberry is very excited to announce the relaunch of With over 34 collections, 77 community areas, and 7,000 data points, the site is the premier tool for exploring Chicago’s history by address. On ChicagoAncestors, you can map the collections, search data by neighborhood, address, and keyword, and add your own research to the site.

Enhancements from the previous version:

  • More legible street names
  • Visible building footprints
  • Scholarly articles on researching Chicago history and genealogy
  • No need to register
  • Community areas are outlined

What remains the same:

  • It’s free to use
  • Can search by address, keyword, and community
  • All data from the previous version has been preserved
  • Can sort by collection, region, category, ethnicity, building, and years
  • City directories and street conversion guides are available
  • Addresses are based on modern numbering system
  • User research, queries, comments, and photographs are encouraged!
