Biography of Edith Allard

American ballet dancer.

Edith Allard began her dance education in Hoopston, Illinois, where she was born in 1927. When her family moved to Chicago, she continued her dance education with Ann Barzel and Mary Vandas. In 1945 Allard was awarded a scholarship to study at the School of American Ballet in New York for a year. Returning to Chicago she joined the Ruth Page Chicago Opera Ballet and by 1949, she had danced with several companies including the Markova-Dolin Company and the New York Radio City Music Hall Corps de Ballet. However, finding scant work in the U.S., Allard moved to Paris to begin a European career.

Allard, a tiny brunette with brooding good looks, spent five years in Paris, danced with the Theatre du Chatelet, studied with Nicholai Zveroff, and married physiotherapist, Serge Signoud, in 1951. She was guest soloist with the Theater National in Tel Aviv, the Ballet de Lyon, and the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm. In 1956, Allard opened her own school in Compiegne, France. Eventually, she conducted master classes at such places as the Royal Swedish Ballet School, the University of Stockholm, LaScala in Italy and the Festival d’Avignon.

Later, Allard married Ingemar Larssen and made her home in Stockholm, Sweden.
