Chicago lawyer, poet, and author.
Mitchell Dawson was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 13, 1890. He was the son of George Ellis Dawson, a prominent area lawyer, and Eva Manierre Dawson. The Dawson household was filled with music and creative endeavor. His parents met as members of a Beethoven society and his father George kept extensive diaries. His brother Manierre Dawson became an abstract painter of note.
Dawson graduated from the University of Chicago Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1913. He eventually joined his father's successful law firm and continued to practice law until two years before his death in 1956.
Alongside his legal work, Dawson pursued a career in writing, in which he achieved varying levels of success. It was during a stint in the Army Intelligence Corps during World War I while living on the East Coast that Dawson made the acquaintance of such literary figures as William Carlos Williams and Alfred Kreymborg. He wrote poetry during his twenties and published in many of the important journals of the time including Poetry,The Little Review, and Alfred Kreymborg's Others. In addition, he coedited a short lived journal called TNT with Man Ray and Adolph Wolff. Back in Chicago he became involved in the Chicago Literary Renaissance and befriended many writers and publishers, including Maxwell Bodenheim, Harriet Monroe and Margaret Anderson.
Starting in the 1920s, Dawson began writing an amusing legal advice column called "Advice of Counsel" which appeared in the Chicago Daily News from 1926-1931. He continued to write feature articles on legal issues which were published in such journals as the Saturday Evening Post, Esquire and The New Yorker. This writing is characterized by a wry wit and a clear, simple style. He published only one book in his lifetime, The Magic Firecrackers, in 1949. This highly regarded children's novel grew out of the bedtime stories he told his son Gregory as a child.
Dawson married Rose Hahn in 1921. Rose's sister Emily "Mickey" Hahn became a successful writer during the 1930s due in some small part to Mitchell submitting a few of her letters to The New Yorker.
Mitchell and Rose had three children: Hilary (later Hilary Beckett Schlessiger), Jill (later Jill Metzger), and Gregory. Mitchell Dawson succumbed to Parkinson's Disease in 1956.
This collection contains correspondence, literary works, research materials and personal papers of Chicago lawyer, poet and author Mitchell Dawson; and materials created by his family and his wife Rose Hahn Dawson's families.
Included are poems by Dawson himself as well as by several of his literary colleagues; correspondence to and from these colleagues including Maxwell Bodenheim, William Carlos Williams, Carl Sandburg, Alfred Kreymborg, Yvor Winters and Emanuel Carnevali; drafts and research for feature articles on the legal profession; and correspondence from his time in Military Intelligence during World War I. There is a small series of law office files and personal papers including publicity for his book The Magic Firecrackers.
Mitchell Dawson's parents George Ellis and Eva Manierre Dawson were prominent Chicago citizens. George Ellis Dawson was a successful lawyer, and Eva Manierre the daughter of one of Chicago's "Old Settlers," Edward Manierre. Correspondence, diaries, genealogical materials, scrapbooks and photographs from both the Dawson and Manierre families vividly reflect life in Illinois and the Midwest at the turn of the century.
Narrative descriptions of the subject matter, types of material, and arrangement of each series are available through the Organization section of the finding aid.
Papers are organized in the following series:
Letters from Mitchell Dawson written to friends, legal and literary associates, and publishers regarding writing submissions. Literary figures include H. L. Mencken, Robert McAlmon, Carl Sandburg, and Maxwell Bodenheim. Additional correspondence from Mitchell Dawson to wife Rose Hahn Dawson and other family members may be found in Series 8: Family Papers.
Arranged alphabetically by recipient followed by folders containing research requests and replies to readers of his published writing.
Letters from friends, legal and literary associates and other correspondents. Of particular interest are letters from Dawson's poet friends such as Carl Sandburg, William Carlos Williams, Alfred Kreymborg, Robert McAlmon, and Italian poet Emanuel Carnevali. Dawson was involved together and separately with these writers in various literary journals during 1918-1920. There are also letters written between many of these writers at the end of the series.
Arranged alphabetically by correspondent followed by folders of replies to information requests, rejection letters, and correspondence not to or from Mitchell Dawson.
This series consists of both Dawson's journalistic writing and his poetry. The majority is made up of notes, research and drafts of his legal writings including his "Advice of Counsel" column, and feature length articles.
Dawson had a relatively brief career writing poetry, most of which appears between 1919-1920. There are several published poems as well as handwritten and typewritten drafts. Of note is his self-published book "Danko" which caused a small scandal when excepts appeared in the Double Dealer. It remains a mystery as to whether a poet named Danko ever existed. Most believe this work was an inside joke of Dawson's, as well as an outlet for work of a more intimate nature.
It appears that Dawson initiated several book length projects that never saw fruition. There are extensive notes and research under such titles as "Frontier Justice," "H. H. (Headed for Hell)," and "Rufus Choate." There are also several drafts of his published novel, The Magic Firecrackers.
Arranged alphabetically by title of work, and by type of material. Poetry is filed under "P" and then by title.
Poetry, essays and other writings by Dawson's literary colleagues collected through his activities as editor and informal literary agent. The majority of the series contains notebooks and drafts of writing by poet Emanuel Carnevali; but also contains unpublished drafts by such luminaries as Carl Sandburg, William Carlos Williams, Yvor Winters, Margaret Anderson, Robert McAlmon, Wallace Gould, and Alfred Kreymborg.
Arranged alphabetically by author.
Clippings, pamphlets, notes and other materials collected by Dawson in researching his various legal articles and book projects.
Arranged alphabetically by subject.
By no means a complete representation of Dawson's legal work, this is a small series of legal documents, notes and correspondence with a handful of people that Dawson represented. Of interest are the materials concerning the sale of the Auditorium Theatre building to Roosevelt College in 1946, for which Dawson represented Roosevelt College.
Arranged alphabetically by subject.
Memberships, publicity clippings, memorabilia, royalty statements and other miscellaneous materials covering various events in Dawson's life. Included are materials regarding the publication of Dawson's children's book The Magic Firecrackers and documents pertaining to his military service during World War I.
Arranged alphabetically by type of material.
The largest series of the collection contains correspondence, diaries and other materials from Mitchell Dawson's extended family and ancestors going back to the early 1800s. The bulk of the series consists of Mitchell's father George Ellis Dawson's correspondence, diaries, writings, and genealogical research into the Dawson and Manierre families. Of particular interest in George Ellis Dawson's materials is the research he did into a Charles Fourier - inspired socialist community called the Integral Phalanx in Sangamon County, Illinois in which his mother Julia Meacham Dawson had been involved.
There are also extensive records from the Manierre family. Eva Manierre Dawson was the daughter of Edward Manierre, a noted figure in Chicago in the mid 1800s. He was an alderman and later Treasurer of the City of Chicago. Eva's sister Kate Manierre lived with the Dawson family throughout her adult life and was a prolific writer and artist who kept detailed diaries of life in the Dawson home and at "The Humps" (the Dawson family farm in Ludington, Michigan.)
Another of Eva Manierre's sisters, Fannie Manierre Ware, suffered the loss of her son Manierre Ware, who died tragically by friendly fire in World War I. There are several folders of correspondence and documents regarding his military company, death, and burial in France.
Also of interest are papers concerning Mitchell's sister-in-law, author Emily "Mickey" Hahn. Mitchell handled Hahn's finances while she was overseas in China during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Mickey Hahn became somewhat of a notorious character while living in China. She had an affair with a Chinese poet, developed an opium addition and eventually became pregnant with the child of a married British intelligence officer. Hahn remained quite close to Rose and Mitchell, and Mitchell appears in many of her autobiographical books.
Arranged alphabetically by family member.
Photographs, photo albums and glass slides of Mitchell Dawson's extended family and relatives. There are numerous family portraits and snapshots of the Dawson and Manierre families as well as Hahn family photos. Includes many photos of the Dawson family farm, also known as "The Humps," in Ludington, Michigan.
Arranged alphabetically and by format.
Miscellaneous souvenirs and scrapbooks collected by various members of the Dawson and Hahn families. Scrapbooks by George Ellis Dawson cover his travels through Europe as well as his activities in music and literary clubs. Scrapbooks by Eva Manierre Dawson also contain souvenirs from Europe; she and her sister Kate studied music in Vienna. There are also several autograph books. One, whose creator is unknown, contains an Oscar Wilde signature in addition to other entertainers of the time who traveled through Chicago in 1882.
Also included are twenty oversize posters that, according to Mitchell's son Gregory, were collected during a trip to Mexico in the 1940s. Several of them feature the Mexican film star Cantinflas; others appear to be government announcements to promote literacy or corn agriculture. Most of them are stored rolled; the last item is extremely fragile and stored flat.
Arranged alphabetically by type of material, followed by posters (listed items 1-17).
The following terms have been used to index the description of this collection in the Newberry Library's public catalog. Researchers desiring additional materials on a particular topic should search the catalog using these headings.

Series 3: Works by Dawson, 1919-ca. 1956 |
|||||||||||
| |||||||||||
| |||||||||||
| |||||||||||
| |||||||||||

Series 8: Family Papers, 1810-1988 |
|||||||||||
| |||||||||||
Eva's sister Kate Manierre lived with the Dawson family throughout her adult life and was a prolific writer and artist who kept detailed diaries of life in the Dawson home and at "The Humps" (the Dawson family farm in Ludington, Michigan.) | |||||||||||
| |||||||||||
| |||||||||||

Series 10: Scrapbooks and Memorabilia, 1851-1951 |
|||||||||||
| |||||||||||
| |||||||||||
