The Charles H. Kerr Company, founded in Chicago in 1886 by Charles
Hope Kerr, is the oldest labor and socialist publishing house in the United
States. It is best known for its editions of radical classics; it was the first
publisher to bring out the three volumes of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital in English, and published the
International Socialist Review since its inception
in 1900. Other authors whose books or contributions were published by Kerr
include such well-known radical and socialist thinkers as Eugene Debs, Mother
Jones, Jack London, Mary E. Marcy, Joe Hill, Clarence Darrow, Sen Katayama,
Antonio Labriola, V.I. Lenin, Friedrich Engels, Leon Trotsky, Carl Sandburg,
Ralph Chaplin, and Arturo M. Giovannitti.
Charles H. Kerr began his career in publishing in 1883 as an assistant
editor and business manager for Unity, a monthly
journal for the Western Unitarian Conference. By 1886, the interests of the
Unity venture were transferred to the brand new
Charles H. Kerr & Company. The new company expanded in the 1880's and
1890's to include the publication of other Unitarian-related literature, and
expanded yet again at the turn of the century to start publishing populist,
reform, socialist, communist, and other radical literature. When Charles Kerr
retired in 1928 he left the company to be handled by John Keracher, who had
been a Kerr Company board member since 1924, had been active in the past in
socialist, communist, and Marxist organizations, and who was also one of the
founders of the Proletarian Party. Keracher combined offices of the Kerr
Company and of the Proletarian Party, and that practice was continued by his
successor, Al Wysocki, when he assumed the management around 1953. The company
nearly went out of existence in the late 1960's, and due to Wysocki's age and
failing health, he transferred the company over to four men in 1971: Fred
Thompson, Burton Rosen, Virgil Vogel, and Irving Abrams. Virgil Vogel resigned
in 1973, and Joe Giganti replaced him. Burton Rosen, who was secretary and did
the bulk of the day-to-day operations and office tasks, retired in 1983 and
handed over operations and management to Franklin and Penelope Rosemont, who
run the company to this day.
Author contracts and manuscripts, correspondence, minutes of
stockholder and board of directors' meetings, subscription lists, book order
information, stockholder information, photographs, clippings, printed material,
and some artwork. Notable pre-1920 records include photographs (many published
in the International Socialist Review) of well-known radicals, and of strike
activity mainly in the United States.
The Proletarian Party's and Kerr Company’s records were searched by
U.S. government agencies during the Palmer Raids of 1918-1921, and it is
believed that many records were seized or destroyed at that time. The fate of
the majority of records during the 1930's and early to mid-1940's is
undetermined; the remaining records sold to the Newberry are primarily dating
from the late 1940's forward.
Narrative descriptions of the subject matter, types of material, and
arrangement of each series are available through the Organization section of
the finding aid.
Papers are organized in the following series:

| Series includes minutes of the meetings of the Board of Directors
and Stockholders, proxies, general correspondence to and from directors of the
company, materials relating to officekeeping, forms, and ephemera. Incoming
correspondence to the company consists of customer requests for catalogs,
review copies, and inquiries about the books. It is interesting to note that a
good portion of requests for free books came from people who were incarcerated,
and on occasion the company did send free copies of books. At the end of this
series there are substantial files of printed material from other organizations
, some of which are fellow publishers, but the majority of which are labor
organizations or independent organizations devoted to radical or progressive
causes (such as the Socialist Party and the Proletarian Party).

| The Author Files include both General Files and Works Files. The
first section, General Files, are where copyright certificates and
correspondence from the authors and about the works is found; the section also
contains folders of requests from "Aspiring Authors" (works that were never
published) and general copyright information. The Works Files contain
manuscripts, typescripts, (either complete or fragments), proof sheets,
galleys, and title pages of the works submitted for publication. The nature and
completeness of the work is indicated after the work's title; TMs refers to
typed manuscript; AMs refers to autograph (handwritten) manuscript. At the end
of the series are a few card files, the first of which inventories the
Kerr-published works alphabetically by author. Subsequent card files are for
the books in the Kerr office not published by Kerr, address lists for
advertisers and suppliers, a short-lived card file of addresses of those
requesting Kerr catalogs, and unidentified cards.
|
| Organized into two sections: General Files (correspondence etc.),
and Works. Arranged alphabetically within each section. The card file of works
published is at the end of the series

| By far the largest series in the collection, the Order Files are
purchase orders, invoices, receipts, and related correspondence for Charles H.
Kerr Company publications from individuals, labor and radical organizations,
other organizations (such as Rotary Clubs and the U.S. Navy), libraries, and
bookstores. Orders for books came from all over the world and nationwide. The
filing schemes for keeping track of the orders varied greatly over the years,
and in some schemes there is overlap with other years. It is said in the Kerr
Co.'s own centennial publication (1985) that order files before 1920 were
confiscated by the United States Government during the times of the Palmer
Raids; unfortunately, most orders from the 1930's seem to have disappeared as
well. On the whole, orders before 1945 are scarce, but some seem to have
survived, especially if the buyer was a regular customer of the Kerr
Company's.
|
| Arranged roughly chronologically. The series follows the original
order of filing, which fluctuates significantly depending on the years of
keeping the records. The first filing system was to group by year or cluster of
years, assign a folder and folder number to every customer as the orders came
in, and to file documents therein, with some miscellaneous folders at the end.
Beginning in 1969, all orders for the year were compiled in one or two folders.
There was a separate sequence of folders, spanning the years 1936-1986, which
were filed alphabetically. There are no order files for 1987-1989.
