Biography of Robert Hunter Middleton

Robert Hunter Middleton was a type designer, lettering artist, graphic designer, and fine-press printer. Born in Scotland in 1898, he came to the U.S. at the age of ten. He graduated from the School of the Art Institute in 1923, after studying with Ernst F. Detterer. As principal designer for the Ludlow Typograph Co. from 1923 to 1970 he was responsible for the design of many typefaces widely used in advertising and newspaper work. He also served as Ludlow’s art director and, in the years before his retirement, on its board. Middleton completed graphic and lettering designs for such Chicago institutions as the Art Institute, Fourth Presbyterian Church, and Frances Parker School. His private press, named Cherryburn for the home of the English wood engraver, Thomas Bewick, specialized in exquisite prints made from original Bewick blocks, which Middleton collected (and later donated to the Newberry Library). In 1970 the Newberry published and distributed Cherryburn’s monumental portfolio of one hundred Bewick prints. Through Cherryburn, Middleton also collaborated with Chicago artist Dale Nichols (1904-1995). Another imprint Middleton founded, Apprentice House, published work in collaboration with Imre Reiner (1900-1987), Margaret Varro, and Phillip Reed (1908- ). Middleton was a founding member of the 27 Chicago Designers and the Society of Typographic Arts, an early participant of the Aspen Design Conference and the Association Internationale Typographique, and an active member of the Typocrafters and other design organizations. In retirement, he taught at Transylvania University, the University of Alabama, Yale, UCLA, and elsewhere.

Scope and Content of the Collection

Diaries, notes, original manuscripts of writings, design art, correspondence, personal and financial records, printed ephemera, and type specimens from the collection of Robert Hunter Middleton. There are extensive files relating to the Ludlow Typograph Co., Middleton’s longtime employer; to Cherryburn Press and Apprentice House, his private imprints; to the Society of Typographic Arts, and to other organizations. The extensive correspondence files include particularly significant exchanges with artists Egdon Margo and Paul Standard; printers Paul Duensing, Joseph Graves, Victor and Caroline Hammer, and Giovanni Mardersteig; and designers John Dreyfus, James Mangan, Leslie Sprunger, and Gordon Williams.

Examples of Middleton’s work are to be found in the cataloged collection. Related materials are in the Newberry Archives, the Caxton Club Archives, the Ernst F. Detterer Papers, the Douglas McMurtrie Papers, the Raymond F. DaBoll Papers, and the James Hayes Papers. Books and ephemera from Middleton’s library are also held by the Daley Library of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Narrative descriptions of the subject matter, types of material, and arrangement of each series are available through the Organization section of the finding aid.

Papers are organized in the following series:

Series 1: Biographical, 1921-1986. Box(es) 1-5

Largely a chronological clipping file, with a few other documents relating to Middleton’s life, including personal financial records. At the end are arranged Middleton’s files of notes on various subjects of professional interest.

Series 2: Written Works, Lectures, etc, 1935-1971. Box(es) 6-8

Middleton was a prolific speaker and author of essays and technical notes on type design. Late in life he also taught.

Drafts and final typescripts are arranged chronologically.

Series 3: Design Projects, 1922-1985. Box(es) 8-12

In addition to his work as a type designer, Middleton also did graphic design for a variety of clients and charities. Documents relating to his type designs are in Series 2, 5, and 12.

Projects are arranged chronologically.

Series 4: General Correspondence, 1921-1985. Box(es) 12-27

Materials relating to Middleton's correspondence with designers from around the world.

Significant exchanges arranged alphabetically by correspondent; miscellaneous letters arranged chronologically at the end.

Series 5: Ludlow Typograph Company, 1925-1971. Box(es) 28-32

The Ludlow Typograph was a typesetting system with a proprietary set of type faces, almost all of them designed or re-worked by Middleton.

This series follows the order of the files Middleton kept on the company after his retirement in 1971.

Series 6: Society of Typographic Arts (STA), 1927-1985. Box(es) 32-36

Middleton was a founder and long-time officer of the Society of Typographic Arts, the most influential design organization in Chicago. These files derive from his work with STA.

Arranged roughly chronologically.

Series 7: Cherryburn Press, 1943-1985. Box(es) 37-40

Cherrryburn was Middlelton’s private imprint, used largely for his printing related to Thomas Bewick, but also for other privately designed books. The series includes legal and financial records, correspondence, and records relating to individual publications.

Series 8: Apprentice House, 1951-1964. Box(es) 41-42

Apprentice House was incorporated as a commercial press by Middleton in partnership with Philip Reed. It published two books.

Series 9: Misc. Organizations, Travel, etc, 1941-1984. Box(es) 42-46

Middleton was an active member of many organizations and traveled extensively for work and pleasure. This series contains his miscellaneous files about travel and attendance at membership organizations.

Series 10: Ephemera Files, 1925-1985. Box(es) 47-53

Like many designers, Middleton collected the work of other designers, companies and organizations in the printing trade, and interesting advertisements.

Arranged alphabetically by the name of the creator or sponsor.

Series 11: Type Specimens, 1925-1980. Box(es) 53-54

Since he was a type designer and because his faces for Ludlow were often based on the work of other designers, Middleton collected and filed type specimens from other companies.

Series 12: Oversize materials, 1930-1985. Box(es) 55-58

These flat boxes contain oversize materials relating to subjects in Series 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 10
