Chicago businessman, Civil War officer, and nephew of Walter Loomis
Newberry, founder of the Newberry Library.
Walter Cass Newberry (1835-1912) was born in Sangerfield, New York on
December 23. During the course of his life, he pursued mercantile activities,
including the hops and barley business in the Chicago area; served in the 24th
New York Cavalry of the Union army during the Civil War, eventually attaining
the rank of brigadier general; served as the mayor of Petersburg, VA; served as
Chicago’s postmaster; and was elected to the Fifty-second Congress of the
United States as a representative from Illinois. He died on July 20, 1912, and
was buried in Chicago’s Graceland Cemetery.

Mainly paperwork related to the finances of Walter Cass Newberry and
his cousin, Henry Warner Newberry. Also materials relating to Newberry's
business ventures and his Civil War regiment, the 24th New York Cavalry.
The majority of the financial papers consist of correspondence between
Walter Cass and Henry Warner, related to the status of the Walter L. Newberry
inheritance case being pursued by said relatives, as well as the final
documentation naming the decendents per stirpes. There are also letters to
Henry Warner Newberry from his creditors, a “Petition of Debtor—Bankrupt” filed
by Henry Warner Newberry, correspendence from William B. Candee and Louise
Candee, Henry Warner Newberry’s brother-in-law and sister respectively, and
Henry Warner Newberry’s Last Will and Testament.
Also in the collection are Walter Cass Newberry’s cash book and
impression books, materials related to Walter C. Newberry’s business ventures,
including the hops and barley business and the buying and renting out of land
and buildings, correspondence between Walter Cass Newberry and members of his
old regiment, the 24th New York Cavalry, documents and photographs related to
the regimental history of the 24th New York Cavalry, and a transcript of Walter
Cass Newberry’s official military record.

to Walter Cass Newberry. There are also materials, including a business
advertising card, related to Walter Cass Newberry’s hops and barley business,
the inventory of Fanny L. Edgerton’s estate, of which W.C. Newberry was
executor, and a certificate from 1897 naming W.C. Newberry as a trustee of the
Soldiers’ Widows’ Home, signed by John R. Tanner, the Governer of Illinois at
the time. Also in the collection are W.C. Newberry’s cash book, four
letter-press books containing information about W.C. Newberry’s finances and
business ventures, and Fanny L. Edgerton’s Last Will and Testament.
