Scope and Content of the Collection

Twelve letters mailed from Jacksonville, Illinois, by and to members of the Shaw family between 1837 and 1849. Contents reflect the daily lives of a nineteenth-century family, particularly of the patriarch, J. Shaw, and details include business concerns, farming matters, health, social events, and religion. Other surnames represented are Bird of Portland, Maine, and Roberts of Fair Haven, Massachusetts. Also, a small receipt for a real estate transaction in Toulon, Illinois, 1843.
