| Notes on the State of Virginia...[Paris, 1784-85] By Thomas Jefferson * Ruggles 193 No. 1 |
The Newberry Library's American history materials are vast and heterogeneous. For over a hundred years, an extensive research collection of basic sources has been built up, including federal, state, and other published archival sources, monographs and periodicals. Rare, ephemeral, and idiosyncratic works also have been acquired over the many decades of collection development.
In general, every period of American history through World War I is well represented in the Newberry Library. For certain subject areas the research material is so rich as to include practically all of the available print records. Some particularly important examples of comprehensive collections include American Indian materials and Western Americana.
