This bibliography is a list of catalogs, guides, checklists, books, articles and papers descriptive of Newberry collections and subject strengths. Originally compiled in 1993, it is updated as necessary. Some sources are widely available. Newberry call numbers and locations are listed after each entry. Copies of each guide may be printed online (use the tag at the bottom of each guide) or persons interested in purchasing photocopies may send a request to the Reference Department at reference@newberry.org

Call number: MS Z 201 .08355. Beers published and collected shorthand manuals. His collection, donated to the Library in 1953, consists of around 3,000 pamphlets and texts in 1,860 volumes. Of the four volume manuscript catalog to the collection, the first volume lists the collection as it was in about 1900, the second about 1902–6, the third, early in 1948, and the fourth (incomplete) in 1949.

Hirsch, Susan E. "The Pullman Company Archives at the Newberry Library." Origins 4.4 (1988): 1-3. Call number: E 171 073 and photocopy in checklist area. This archive consists of 1,600 square feet of ledgers, drawings, work orders, and financial records of the Pullman Corporation from the 1870s until 1959. There are no personal letters of George Pullman or office correspondence relating to the administration of the company. The material is richest for the daily function of the company in the 1920s and 1930s.

Jackson, Elizabeth Coleman and Carolyn Curtis, comps. Guide to the Burlington Archives in the Newberry Library, 1851–1901. Chicago: Newberry Library, 1949. Call number: Ref HE 2791 C6425 in checklist area. This collection, of approximately 400 square feet, is richest for the years 1870 to 1895. It is strongest in terms of financial and administrative records. There is little material of a working nature, i.e. payrolls, lists of employers, track or engine construction and maintenance, or any policy statements.

This archive of 350 square feet contains a valuable series of letters from the President, Stuyvesant Fish, 1887–1906 (80 volumes). The richest part of the collection runs from 1880 to 1905, with strengths in high-level administration. There are no working papers dealing with railway operations or personnel for this period.
