About the Newberry Library Online Catalog

What is included in the Newberry Online Catalog?

The Newberry's online catalog is the primary catalog for the Library (i-share.carli.illinois.edu/nby/). It includes the majority of the Library's collections and contains over 800,000 titles.

There are materials that are not represented in the online catalog, some of which can be found using other online tools. For example, most city directories are not in the online catalog. Instead, these are listed on our web site (www.newberry.org/genealogy/dirholdings.html).

The Newberry Library holds an estimated 500,000 maps issued separately and in atlases and books. Not all of these cartographic resources are listed in the online catalog. More than 50,000 records for maps, atlases, and literature on the history of cartography are available through the Newberry Library Cartographic Catalog (www.biblioserver.com/newberry).

Modern manuscript collections are also under-represented in the online catalog, having been traditionally described with paper finding aids. It is the goal of the Newberry to have all the modern manuscript collections (now numbering about 700) represented in the online catalog. Collection-level records and more detailed online inventories exist for more than 100 of these manuscript collections. To explore the modern manuscript collections, please consult the online catalog and the Checklist for American Modern Manuscript Collections.

Are Newberry materials listed in any other online catalogs?

Yes, the titles represented in the Newberry's online catalog are included in the following databases:

Are Newberry materials listed in any print catalogs?

Yes. The Newberry's holdings are well represented in the National Union Catalog, pre-1956 imprints (NUC). Some of the Newberry Library's manuscript collections are listed in the print version of the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC).

Selected Newberry collections have print catalogs that are widely held by academic libraries.

In addition to these large print catalogs, there are a variety of print resources--guides, checklists, books, articles and papers--that are descriptive of Newberry collections and subject strengths. Originally compiled in 1993, the Bibliographic Guide to the Newberry Library Collections lists Newberry-specific print resources.

Even when Newberry materials are cataloged online, there may be useful print resources that provide deeper analysis. For instance, all items in the Graff Collection are found in the online catalog. In addition, Colton Storm's A Catalog of the Everett D. Graff Collection of Western Americana provides a level of descriptive bibliographical analysis that is not currently seen in the Graff online records.
