American Opera Society of Chicago. Records, 1920-1990.

Formed in 1921 by Chicago social leader Edith Rockefeller McCormick and composer Elinor Everest Freer to promote music, the American Opera Society of Chicago commissioned the translation of 23 operas in English. In its later incarnation it became a support group providing scholarships to rising opera stars. The collection includes several boxes and six albums of clippings, performance announcements, photos, member lists, meeting minutes and programs.

Photographs, programs, postcards, letters home, scrapbook, and travel souvenirs from around the world of two sisters who were "all girl" band members during the 1920's. Genevieve and Grace Brown performed with Harry Waiman and His Debutantes and with The Ingenues, "Girl's Orchestra of 20 College Beauties," which became a feature of Ziegfield's Follies in 1927. Also a 1918 World War I diary and letter home of Corporal McA Brown who served with the American Expeditionary Force in the trenches in France.

Also cassette tape copy of the Sept. 28, 1999, performance at Preston Bradley Hall, and a photocopy of the Carl Sandburg poem "More Rootabagas" that formed the lyrics of the piece.

Recordings of his works and his performances are present in various formats.

Abstract: A large scrapbook containing material on the activities of this music-appreciation club for German-Americans. Chartered in 1869 with possible origins in the organization of a choir to sing at President Lincoln's lying-in-state in Chicago, the Germania Club became a meeting place for Chicago's German elite. The name was changed to the Lincoln Club during World War I and changed back in 1921.

Manuscript and printed music and some miscellanea of this Chicago music publisher, along with the papers of Rossetter G. Cole, a prolific Chicago composer. Cole bequeathed his papers to Harry T. FitzSimons; his manuscript and printed music, writings, clippings, programs, miscellanea, and collections of calling cards, postcards, and autographs make up a large portion of this collection. A small amount of Harry FitzSimons' correspondence is also present. The FitzSimons Co. was purchased in 1983 by the Fred Bock Music Companies.

Music manuscripts of Robert H. Just, German-American composer, violinist, and educator. Weidig was born in Berlin in 1875 and emigrated with his family to Chicago in 1885, where he studied violin at the Chicago Musical College. He taught at the Quincy (Ill.) Music Conservatory, The Chicago Conservatory, and the Metropolitan Conservatory in Chicago, as well as in Memphis Tennessee, and Wichita Kansas. Among his solo instrument, chamber, symphonic, and vocal works is a series of "Nine Songs of Sappho," set to the poetry of John Myers O'Hara.

Sayers was born in London and studied at the Royal College of Music before moving to Chicago in 1920, where he became a percussionist for the CSO under Frederick Stock before a promotion to librarian. His papers include a wealth of information on the CSO and prominent figures such as Eric De Lamarter, Stock, Theodore Thomas and many others; also included are Sayers' collection of opera librettos and advertisements from 1856 to 1880, financial records, and a large amount of family correspondence and memorabilia.

Incoming correspondence to Frederick A. Stock, second conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Of the sixty items, twenty are written in German, several in French, and one in Italian from Ottorino Respighi to a person named "Rossi." Included among the more interesting pieces are letters from Nadia Boulanger, Percy Grainger and Walter Damrosch, and postcards with their photos from Wilhelm Backhaus and Wanda Landowska. Also, a letter in German from Theodore Thomas written in 1904; and a letter from Rose Fay Thomas written in 1905, which describes Thomas's burial and also gives her directive for the maintenance of her husband's musical scores. Other correspondents include John Alden Carpenter, Pablo Casals, Gregor Piatagorsky, Georg Schumann, John Philip Sousa, and Fannie Bloomfield Zeisler.
