Here are our top ten reasons why you should be part of the Newberry Consort experience:
- You get an ensemble you can trust. The Newberry Consort has
been performing since 1986, has recorded a growing catalog of CDs on the
internationally distributed harmonia mundi label, and is ensemble-in-residence
at the Newberry Library, the Northwestern University School of Music, and the University of Chicago.
- It's convenient! You fit the Newberry Consort into your
schedule. Purchase tickets to one, two, three, four, or all five programs. And
if your schedule changes, you can exchange tickets to another date, or even to
another program, with no added exchange fee.
- You'll feel at home in our comfortable performance spaces: the
Newberry Library's intimate Ruggles Hall, the University of Chicago's warm Fulton Recital Hall,
and Northwestern University's convivial Lutkin Hall.
- You'll hear the finest pre-classical musicians in the world, including
renowned singers Drew Minter (countertenor) and Ellen Hargis (soprano), virtuoso violinist and Consort
director David Douglass, lutenists Paul O'Dette and Grant Herreid, and early wind instrument experts Tom Zajac and
Debra Nagy.
- You can relax in our informal atmosphere. Wear jeans or wear a
suit. However you choose to dress, you'll be welcomed by our friendly staff and
volunteers.
- You can meet the performers after the concert for one-on-one
conversations (ok, maybe it will be a small group of like-minded folks).
- You have three convenient locations to choose from: Downtown Chicago,
Hyde Park, and Evanston.
- You'll learn something new. Through engaging
pre-concert lectures* and her wide-ranging program notes, you'll gain
fascinating insights into how the music was created and what life was like for
the listeners who heard it for the first time.
- You won't spend a fortune. Forty dollars is our top regular price.
Plus, you get greater discounts the more programs you attend.
Our student discount is 50% or more off the regular admission price,
and for the Friday and Saturday evening concerts (which have open seating by section)
bring a youth (elementary or high school age) for free!.
- You'll always hear something new. Our scholar-musicians are
continually on the lookout for new and interesting sources for music from the
thirteenth through eighteenth centuries, as well as continually mining the
rich collections of the Newberry Library itself.
So if you haven't heard us yet, give us a try. If you've heard us
