A delightfully wicked exploration of the world view of the Middle Ages, when peasants and nobles alike knew a world inhabited by creatures other than just humans and believed that such forces as Dame Fortune influenced daily life. At the same time, alchemists spent years on their search for the philosopher's stone, that magical transformation of base metal into gold. The program ends with the retelling of a ghost story from late fourteenth-century Italy.
German music from the high Middle Ages by Niedhart, Alexander, Wolfram von Eschenbach, and others.
Fourteenth-century Italian music for a Christmas feast. Comprises songs and instrumental music from the Newberry Consort's highly praised harmonia mundi compact disc of the same name.
An enthralling re-creation of a midnight entertainment at the fourteenth-century French court of Gaston III, Count of Foix, as described in the famous Chronicle of Jean Froissart.
Medieval music inspired by the Arthurian cycles of tales and poems.
During the Middle Ages, animals and their behavior were seen to be emblematic of the human condition. This fascinating program includes French and Italian works of the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries about beasts both real and imagined. Composers represented include Mattheo da Perugia, Lorenzo da Firenze, Solage, and others.
