Antonia Contro: Closed and Open
May 17–July 15, 2006
“Not unlike the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century devotees of natural history,” writes artist Antonia Contro, “I create visual systems that explain the world as I see and imagine it.” Viewing the work of the Newberry Library as a logical and poetic complement to her art, Contro mounted a site-specific exhibition, Closed and Open, that highlighted the Library’s mission, meaning, architecture, and extraordinary collections. Working collaboratively with Newberry librarians and curators, she integrated pieces from the Newberry’s collections into the installation to create, as Contro herself describes it, “dynamic relationships between past and present, text and image, academe and art, meaning and imagination.”
