How Rare is Rare?
Ephemeral Printing from the Italian Renaissance

to the Chicago Renaissance
April 2 - April 26, 2008

At every period, printers made their bread and butter with occasional or ephemeral printing, what we now dismissively call "junk mail." Inevitably, the more temporary the use a printed object had, the less likely it was to survive and the greater its rarity today. Posters, often prized for their art, represent the upper end of the ephemera spectrum. Collectors have always enjoyed amassing smaller paper objects too, and today colorful advertising pieces have a particular vogue.

Ephemeral imprints have research value too, and this display includes examples from 1519 to 1959 that evidence social and political events, parties and entertainments, luxury and penny-ante markets, and the mania to collect paper. Needless to say, an individual item has less research value than a collection of items related by theme, maker, style, or format. Here we can show only a few isolated examples of what the Newberry holds.
