The histories of the great empires of the modern world are also histories of cartography. The explorers who remapped the world in the wake of Columbus served European states and merchants seeking tradable goods, raw materials, new markets, labor sources, and land. Military officials, surveyors, and bureaucrats used maps to plan the conquest, settlement, and exploitation of new colonies. Back at home, maps published by geographers, educators, and journalists propagated the image of imperialism and generated popular support for it. These themes addressed in this selection of maps from the Newberry's collections were also the subject of the Fifteenth Kenneth Nebenzahl, Jr., Lectures in the History of Cartography.
