Pomp and Circumstance:
A Look at Presidential Inaugurations
December 16, 2008 - February 16, 2009

On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama will be inaugurated the forty-fourth president of the United States. For many reasons, it is a truly historic moment, and the occasion has inspired this small exhibition. In preparing this installation, the continuities across more than two hundred years of American history stand out perhaps more than the differences. While the historical details are always changing, the political issues and rhetorical devices have remained surprisingly consistent. Among them, debates about the meaning of the presidency and about the balance of power; scurrilous attacks on candidates; the desire to create an American political culture distinct from European antecedents; and equal measures of pride and embarrassment at the grand gestures of inaugural celebrations.

The Newberry has developed a large collection of materials related to the American presidency. In addition to the objects on display in this exhibit, the collection includes formal reports on the words and deeds of the presidents, ephemera, and personal accounts of political events. This deep and wide ranging collection will inspire interested readers to pursue a plethora of presidential topics. Register today for a free reader's card and explore.
