Upton Sinclair stumbled upon the idea for The Jungle while on assignment for the Socialist weekly, Appeal to Reason, in 1904. He had always felt a strong connection to the workingman and a 1904 strike of Chicago meatpackers fueled his desire to uncover the working conditions in the city’s Union Stockyard. During his seven weeks in Chicago, Sinclair witnessed a Lithuanian wedding that grew into his story of struggling immigrant Jurgis Rudkus. Though Sinclair intended his book to highlight the supremacy of Socialism, The Jungle sparked public fears over the purity of meat and led to the first federal regulation of the food industry. The Newberry holdings reveal how a single book influenced a nation.
