Type for the Tower of Babel

In our increasingly integrated world, English is in the ascendant. But the multi-lingual Internet has also brought about a renaissance in non-English languages, many of them written in non-Roman alphabets. The resulting type issues, however, are not new. As the selection of books in this display shows, they are as old as printing.

The study of type in historical contexts is a specialty of the Library’s John M. Wing Foundation. We invite you to explore this collection and others at the Newberry — to think about history, for inspiration in solving design problems, or just for fun.

This display is presented in conjunction with the The Caxton Club/Newberry Library 2007 Symposium on the Book, “Remodeling the Tower of Babel: The Translator’s Role in a Shrinking World,” to be held on March 31, 2006.
