Where did the FamilySearch Cook County vital record images go?
Due to a revised contract, FamilySearch has deleted all images for Cook County vital records from its online collection. The free indexes to the collections will remain. The collections being impacted are:
Illinois, Cook County Birth Certificates, 1878-1922
Illinois, Cook County Birth Registers, 1871-1915
Illinois, Cook County Deaths, 1878-1922
Illinois, Cook County Marriages, 1871-1920
There are still several easy ways to obtain copies of the images. The microfilms are available from the Family History Library through their online ordering system. Many of the local Chicago-area Family History Centers have them on permanent loan. Or you can request a digital copy through the Family History Library.
There are also independent researchers who offer this service. Several are available through Genlighten.
For more information about Cook County vital records and their availability, see the Newberry Cook County Vital Records Guide.
This isn’t all bad news, however. Under the new agreement, FamilySearch will obtain an additional 4.7 million records. It appears that the exact content of these records has not yet been announced.
