Are there telephone books or city directories for Chicago, Cook County for the year 1940? And how long do you think before it will be that Illinois will be alphabetically listed for the 1940 census?
The Newberry does have the 1940 Chicago Telephone Book. A full list of our directory holdings is available at: http://www.newberry.org/sites/default/files/textpage-attachments/City%20Directories.pdf. According to the Illinois State Genealogical Society website, the 1940 census for Illinois is about 2% indexed. For more information about the indexing effort and how you can volunteer to help, check their website at: http://www.ilgensoc.org/.
