Evangelical Lutheran Church of America Records

This week Ancestry.com introduced a new collection “Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Records, 1875-1940.”

According to Ancestry’s description, “This collection contains baptism, confirmation, marriage, and burial records from more than 2,000 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) congregations. The records range from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century. The information contained in the records varies from congregation to congregation (and sometimes from minister to minister). In some ethnic congregations, you may run into records in German, Danish, or some other language.”

The ELCA records include approximately 30 Chicago-area churches. While most of the records from these congregations appear to be from the 1890’s forward, records from a few early Chicago congregations can be found in the collection as well. The records from Our Savior date from the 1850’s, the records from Bethlehem begin in 1874 and those from the Lake View Congregation start in 1848.

The Ancestry interface allows for browsing by church as well as providing the standard search functions.
