Here is an image of the Everrett House Thanksgiving Dinner menu for November 24, 1870 from the Newberry’s collection (call no.Vault broadside Graff 1275).

The Chicago Tribune proclaimed the Everrett House (located at the corner of Clark and Van Buren Streets) as “among the best hotels in the city. It has lately been enlarged and improved and accommodations are first class. The proprietors, Mesers. White & Mosely, are gentlemen who know how to keep a hotel…Travelers and others will find a comfortable home at this excellent house.” (Chicago Tribune, October 18, 1869.)

The menu included soups, fish, boiled and roast dishes, cold dishes, side dishes, relishes, vegetables, pastries and desserts - a feast that included everything from fresh lobsters to roast opossum, roast elk to broiled snipe, cranberry sauce, mashed turnips and boiled onions. A variety of wines, sherries, champagnes and ales were available to quench one’s thirst. The price for this feast is unknown.

Whether your meal is made up of traditional Thanksgiving fare or something exotic, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.
