Genealogy Weekend

Join us this Saturday at 9:30 for the monthly Genealogy and Local History Orientation. This event is especially helpful for those new to genealogical research or new to research at the Newberry. After the orientation, stay and start your research in the General Reading Room where the reference staff will be available to assist you.

After the reading rooms closes at 1pm, join the Chicago Genealogical Society for their monthly meeting at 1:30.

This month’s event is Speed Dating for Genealogists. Bring your “brick wall” research questions and you will have an opportunity to ask an expert during this highly interactive and enjoyable program. The expert panel will be:

  • Jeanne Larzalere Bloom CG(SM) - A full-time professional researcher specializing in Chicago and Cook County research
  • Julius Machnikowski – Clerk at the Circuit Court of Cook County Archives
  • Craig Pfannkuche – Independent research professional and President of Memory Trail Research, Inc.
  • Matt Rutherford - Curator of Genealogy and Local History at the Newberry Library.

Can’t make it to downtown Chicago? Here’s a suggestion for those who’d rather travel north:

The stacks of Chicago’s Newberry Library bulge with maps, family papers, genealogies, railroad archives and much, much more. Learn what’s available for your U.S. and European forebears and how to access it in person or from a distance. Your guide is longtime library assistant Grace Dumelle. Grace will help attendees with strategies, catalog checks and handouts at the Newberry’s booth before her talk Friday and all day Saturday April 5. Copies of her book, Finding Your Chicago Ancestors, will also be available for signing and purchase.
