The ELCA Archives holdings include parish histories and microfilm copies of many Chicago Lutheran church records and the original records of a few disbanded parishes. Microfilm may be viewed at the archives by appointment or borrowed for up to one month for a $15 fee. The archives web site is an excellent source of information about Chicago Lutheran congregations and the location of their records.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) The ELCA represents the oldest strain of American Lutheranism going back to the 17th century, as well as many 19th century German, Scandinavian and Eastern European immigrant groups.

Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) The ELS was founded by Norwegian Lutherans. Congregations are concentrated in the upper Midwest, including a few in Chicago.

Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) The LC-MS was founded by Germans that immigrated to Perry County and St. Louis, Missouri. The second largest Lutheran denomination, congregations are located in all U.S. states and territories.

Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) WELS was founded by Germans in Wisconsin. Though concentrated in the upper Midwest, congregations are located throughout the U.S.

St. Ansgarius

St. Ansgarius was founded in 1849 by Gustav Unonius, a Swedish Lutheran that became a priest in the Episcopal Church. The parish served Swedish immigrants.

St. Paul (First St. Paul)

German.
Missouri Synod.
In 1848, Pastor Christian A.T. Selle and some members of St. Pauls German Evangelical Church (now St. Pauls United Church of Christ) separated themselves from the majority of the congregation because of doctrinal disagreement. The splinter group organized itself as First St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church and built its first building at Indiana (now Grand) between Wells and Franklin in 1849. It moved to Franklin and Superior in 1864 and to LaSalle and Goethe in 1910. Presently located at 1301 N. LaSalle.
