The center serves as the archives for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Holdings include the records of active Chicago parishes on microfilm. The original records of Old St. Mary's, St. Elizabeth's, and all closed or disbanded congregations are also at the center. Only records dating before 1916 are available for genealogical research. A guide to genealogical research at the archives is available on its web site. An appointment should be make in advance of a visit.

Holy Name Cathedral

State and Superior. Began in 1846 as a Chapel of the Holy Name at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. Organized as a parish 1849. Although the official cathedral was St. Mary's at Madison and Wabash, Holy Name served as de facto cathedral from 1851 until the Chicago fire in 1871.
