The Newberry Library holds one of the best printed collections for English genealogy and local history outside the British Isles. To determine the Library's holdings for a given county, region, village or other locality, you should search both the card and computer catalogs under the name of the place as a subject heading.
English genealogies held by the Newberry are concerned primarily with nobility or gentry. To search for these titles you should look in both the card and computer catalogs under the family surname as a subject heading. Remember that in the card catalog the surname subject heading comes after author headings of the same name.
