These files (refered to as the Local and Family History Vertical Files) have been donated to the Newberry Library by genealogists, their families or genealogy societies. They include an eclectic mix of materials such as copies of original records, research notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, personal diaries, and bibliographies.
The vertical files do not have call numbers. To request a file, write "vertical file" in the call number box and the surname or place name in the title box on the standard yellow call slip. Turn these slips in at the second floor circulation desk.
