Associates Night

Thursday, March 5, 2009
5:00 - 7:30 pm

In appreciation for the generosity of our Associates and President's Fellows in supporting the Annual Fund, the Newberry Library Associates Council invites donors at the Bibliophiles ($50) level and above to an evening reception.

Join us for exclusive advance preview shopping at the Mystery and More Book Fair and a special presentation by Sarah Burns, the Newberry's Terra Foundation for American Art Fellow in Art History, and Ruth N. Halls Professor of Fine Arts, Department of History of Art, Indiana University, Bloomington. She will present her current research project, "This Old (Haunted) House."

Program includes:

5:00 pm     Reception and Mystery and More Book Fair preview shopping

6:00 pm     This Old (Haunted) House
Who can forget the foreboding Victorian mansion that looms over the Bates Motel in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho? This house with its Mansard roof has been the abode of the weird and uncanny in countless movies, mystery novels, Gothic romances, and horror comics. But where did it come from? Why did it become such an icon? Join us as Sarah Burns explores the dark side of American domestic architecture, its representations and connotations, in the elite and popular arts of the early twentieth century. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period.

Reception and shopping continue until 7:30 pm.
