A University of Chicago professor and editor of editions and series of Renaissance music, Howard Mayer Brown (1930-1993) was also a great collector of libretti, musical instruments, and books on music who directed considerable resources to the microfilming of music from the 13th through the 19th centuries. Brown donated his library (including his collection of microfilm) and his papers to the Newberry.
This research guide (available as two PDF files: Part 1 and Part 2) lists libretti in Brown’s collection. Some of these materials have been recataloged. To locate Brown libretti in the online catalog, search for the phrase Howard Mayer Brown Collection (Newberry Library) as an author. Please contact a librarian with questions.
